It’s very difficult to review this game without picturing bedraggled cricketers demonstrating all that is mad about the British and their love of this wonderful game. Watched by loved ones and friends wrapped up under countless scarves etc., it was hardly representative of the traditional image of village cricket. However, the lads gave their all in atrocious conditions.
Unfortunately, Washington have had a rich vein of form early season and amassed a daunting 264, which was way too many for us to realistically chase down. Sam went early for 1; David got a start, but was unable to build on it, whilst Slug stuck to the task, remaining not out for 24. The rest was fairly pitiful, with 5 ducks, eventually seeing us all out for 72.
Our bowlers stuck at it: Laurie, opening, had decent figures and will have gained encouragement from the spell. Patch bowled well in conditions not conducive to his pace and he took 2-38. Rosie, Monty and Diddy were fairly expensive, but Phil Tufnell Atherton gave a marvellous exhibition of looping spin to take two late wickets.
All in all it was a desperately disappointing day weather wise, but was played in a very good spirit, as it always is with Washington. Man of the match this week is tough to call but I am going with Graham for his stubborn innings.
