After the debacle of the opening match, it was very much “all change” for the game at Washington; not so much in a change in personnel, but in the way the side functioned in all departments. Quite simpl,y we equalled the opposition on every level and they were the first to agree that had we posted an extra 20 runs the game would almost certainly have been ours. As it was, the result was a very close defeat by 2 wkts.

In contrast to our first game of the season, we had a plethora of fine performances both individually and corporately. Batting first, we amassed a score of 122, owing much to another fine innings from Chris Staight, who remained not out 50 at the close of the innings. He was given good support by Sam Mellor, Neil Lightfoot and…. well that was it really - it would not be the old Wanderers if we did not have a slight hiccup down the order!

Jamie Carter excelled himself by doubling his time at the crease to two deliveries this week, Ian Clarke fell victim to the terrors of the straight delivery, and Monty was silly enough to attempt to run. A score of 122 was probably 20 runs shy of what was needed, but on a wicket that was green, spongy and so low that runs were at a premium, it still offered hope to the bowlers. And how we rose to the challenge! - due mainly to an inspired Jamie Carter who bowled 12 overs of consistent pace and length to return figures of 5 for 25 from 12 overs.

After the previous game it is with great pride and not a little surprise, that I have to report the following. The fielding was awesome with two great catches from Rob and Tony and a great all round team effort; Monty pitched in with two wickets at a vital time and Washington were made to sweat for their victory. Post match verdicts from the opposition were very positive, not only about the performance, but also about our team ethic that showed itself in the Washington innings when we asked that an LBW decision was overturned in the batsman’s favour.

Man of the match

Jamie carter, for his 5 wkts, and matched equally by Chris for his 50 runs.

Things to work on?

Well it would not be AWCC if we didn’t have a few areas to work on would it? Monty is looking at ways to install a custom built Stanna stair lift between the stumps to help his mobility. Whilst Jamie is going back to the batting manual, in fact as far back as a plastic beach cricket set!
