The promise shown from the previous game at Arundel ultimately failed to materialise in our first home game of the season.  Batting first, AWCC put together a competitive score of 179 that was, in hindsight, a little short of what was required on a good batting strip.

Sam looked to be in for a good stay at the crease as did Graham but neither were able to push on and,
with the first wicket going down at 30, it was up to David Groves to add momentum to the innings.  He found the boundary 10 times on the way to a solid 68 and was 6th wicket down at 169, having occupied the crease for 18 overs.  Other contributions included a fine 23 from Ian Clarke, who is relishing this new season's challenge, whilst Jamie chipped in with 11.  Overall, 179 runs were acceptable and one sensed that maybe we felt it may be enough; but recent history against Salthill has shown they have depth and experience in their batting line up.

Salthill’s opening pair moved untroubled onto 61 off the first 12 overs and the run rate was steady enough to hint at the run chase being very much on. Arun needed to pull back the opposition who had reached a hundred for just the one wicket down. Monty applied the brakes from one end, at one stage having taken 2-9 of 6 overs, and, with David Groves bowling tight from the other end, the game swung in the balance at 128-4.

Arun really needed another wicket at this stage but gritty batting from the visitors meant they reached the target with an over to spare. It was a game of "what if's" really, posting a score that was maybe 20 short, and not applying early pressure with the ball, but ultimately a good game was won deservedly by a side that just had that little bit extra on the day, who set about the target sensibly and held their nerve.

It was a good day and the after match get together was congenial, with Salthill staying on a good while to enjoy a drink with us.

Man of the match was undoubtedly Diddy, with Ian shining again.  Bowling honours went to Geoff (though as I am writing this I will change that to Diddy lol).  Other highlights included Laurie's non-attempt at a caught and bowled, after which he exclaimed "oh that was my catch" in a barclayesque brogue, a medal of honour for Tony who was hardly able to walk before having to retire, and lastly many thanks to Mark Evans for guesting.
