Comprehensive and professional are the two words that sum up Wanderers’ display at Salthill on Sunday. It was also a game of personal achievements which added to the sweet taste of success.
Inserting the opposition, AWCC were soon amongst the wickets, reducing the home side to 48-5 in 16 overs and, despite a late response, Arun dismissed Salthill for 136. Bowling performance of the game was David Groves, who took 5-23 from 10 overs. He was ably supported at the beginning by Jordan, who did everything but take a wicket. Astute captaincy by Chris saw the home side completely stuck for a period of around 15 overs, with Jonty 2-14 , Monty 2-36 and Tony, (conceding only 2 an over), squeezing the life out of the home teams batsmen.
The scene had been set for Montys 100th club wicket, and early doors it seemed the two needed would have to wait; but a clean bowled led to the moment arriving, with Graham’s stumping, and congratulations were offered all round. Our display was the culmination of much improvement shown over the last two games against strong opposition.
We still had to get the runs of course, and we lost Jonty with nothing on the board. But that was where the nerves ended, as Simon Locke on debut, and that man Groves again, took the home attack to the cleaners with a partnership of 130. Simon went to a dubious lbw for 69, which included 3 sixes, and David remained not out on 57, thus earning the clear man of the match award. The home side made an official award of the match ball to Monty to celebrate his milestone.
Overall the days performance was pretty much as good as it gets, and the only shame now is the gap that means we have no games till August. Hopefully, though, we will all get together again next Friday.
Well done everyone - awesome!
