My two pence worth. By Phil Atherton

We toiled hard in the field – our bowling didn’t really get going and we allowed their openers to get set fair: then we had the baseball player to contend with, who really needs to be dismissed before he gets his eye in.  Jamie did his best beating the bat a few times, but then his eye was in and the ball was hit to all parts including the pavilion roof.  There was no bad bowling; we just lacked a little penetration on a pitch that was benign.  Graham bowled well and was rewarded when he varied his pace

We went out to bat and Groves played in pain from a dislocated finger – lofted one to mid off.  Chris got himself in and was motoring with Graham supporting, only to be caught superbly by a diving Roehampton fielder in the covers for 37.  The next few batsmen came and went before getting themselves set, but Graham dug in and nirdled his way to his 50, supported by Phil (no legs left) Atherton who pulled the muscle in his other leg going for a slow single – Roehampton sportingly refusing to run him out.  Enter Patch (I’ll make Graham sweat) as runner and his running put on at least 4 extra runs than deserved – once making Graham run 4 just as the ball crossed the boundary…..I think beaten by youth in the end

Thanks Phil…  as for the details of the game, kindly given over the phone by Chris, I can report that visitors Roehampton amassed a very healthy 257-7.  The pick of the bowlers being Slug with 2 wickets.  We unfortunately managed a few dropped catches that enabled Babe Ruth to hit a stunning 60.

However points of note for us included Matt West, bowling his first senior over for AWCC, and Phil having his first over for the club.  Chris also mentioned a second successive run out by Patch, (good on you mate), and I believe also a great catch by Diddy?  Our batting was dominated by two scores, Slug getting an unbeaten 52, carrying his bat through the innings, with Chris hitting a hasty 37.  Other scores came from Jamie, with a cameo of 11, and Phil, remaining not out on 13.  All in all a heavy defeat, but with positive points to reflect on.

We now look forward to renewing old rivalry with Rustington next week
