Report by Phil Atherton
As expected, no matter what the result of the toss, AWCC started the game in the field.
The opening bowlers toiled long and hard with no real breakthrough until Sam "I'll do it meself" Mellor brought himself on and promptly took 3 wickets for 12 off 3 overs.
It must be said that the fielding did not reach the heights of the Salthill game (maybe a reaction to the first home game of the season?).
Much can be said of the outfield which tempted and teased fielders into a commitment to dextrous tendencies a la Cable before very much swerving to the left in a Clegg-ish manner. Poor Mark Rose didn't know which way to vote and so became a sorry victim of proportional representation by sticking to the middle ground and achieving nothing material.
Mark was ably assisted in maintaining family honour by his son Joe who took his first wicket for AWCC by bamboozling the oppo skipper into playing all around the ball and seeing his middle stump removed.
Carshalton finished on 229 for 9, leaving a total that was achievable by AWCC, bearing in mind the aggressive batting in winter nets.
Sam put in a surprise firecracker opener in Patrick Atherton who duly obliged with 15 off 6 balls. This, with Jordan's steady progress, put AWCC in an unusual position of 21 runs off 3 overs. In came Sam Mellor to start a magnificent innings of 106. He was joined at times by various batsmen who attempted to join him in the boundary melee, but who either couldn't stay in to keep the score knocking along or who had difficulty getting the ball over the boundary rope.
In the end Mark Rose came in to shove Phil Atherton into more action than his 1.5km of singles but it was all too late and AWCC fell 13 runs short of victory.
Stand out (?) performances:
Sam for his century and ability to preserve a bowling strike rate by judging when the opposition had the measure of his front on bowling style.
Laurie who bowled an aggressive 7 overs and took 2 wickets with his worst balls (the spirit of Botham lives on).
Adam who realised that a leg spinner’s lot is generally to see balls fly to the boundary but to keep on bowling in the hope of a miss.
Patch who bowled 8 overs for 30 off a very controlled run up and finally Phil - who ran 60 odd lengths of the pitch in his innings supporting Sam but who really needs a lesson in despatching shorter balls to the boundary.
